How to Store Crystals and Organise Them Easily
Trying to figure out how to store your crystals properly can become a minefield if you don’t know.
A large wooden box is a great solution but they are difficult to find these days and when you do they are very pricey.
Firstly, The Wrong Way to Store Crystals
Some crystals are fragile so you need to look into the structure of your crystals that could potentially get damaged.
Sunlight
Some crystals can fade or crack with excessive exposure to direct sunlight so it is important that they are not kept in the sun for a long time. It is recommended that you keep the following crystals somewhere cool and away from windows where the sun shines through.
- Amber
- Amethyst
- Ametrine
- Aquamarine
- Aventurine
- Carnelian
- Celestite
- Chrysoprase
- Citrine
- Fluorite
- Howlite
- Kunzite
- Opal
- Rose Quartz
- Sapphire
- Smokey Quartz
Damn/Wet Areas
- Angelite
- Calcite
- Desert Rose
- Halite
- Hematite
- Labradorite
- Lepidolite
- Lodestone
- Magnetite
- Malachite
- Obsidian
- Opal
- Pyrite
- Selenite
Make sure you store the above crystals away from any sources of moisture and away from harder crystals. These crystals are best cleansed using sage or incense.
Hot Water: Lepidolite and Moldavite can fracture in hot water.
It is always a good idea to research the hardness of your crystals (Mohs Scale) to see how fragile they are, any crystals 4 and below are pretty fragile, see chart below.
How to Store Crystals
There are a few options on how to store your crystals. The main rule is to keep your rough pieces away from your polished crystals so as not to scratch them.
- You can use organza bags or velvet pouches, best for tumblestones and small rough pieces but keep separately so as not to damage them.
- Compartment/Jewellery box.
- Wood box or wooden bowl (my favourite for tumblestones).
- Vintage wooden printer tray.
- Chest of drawers could work with different boxes inside.
- If you have a small collection of tumbles Selenite Bowls are great to store and cleanse at the same time.
Personally, I prefer boxes/bowls made from organic materials as they come from nature but its your personal choice as plastic boxes are fine just not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye and are not from nature.
Storing large items such as carvings and clusters these are lovely to display on shelves, bookcases, altars, and some are ok to display on windowsills (see notes above for crystals best to avoid direct sunlight).
Just remember when displaying crystals think about the energy of each crystal and the energy you want to achieve in each room, for example, in a bedroom you would want calm and tranquillity so you wouldn’t want a vitality crystal in there such as carnelian or citrine as they would keep you awake.
