Origin: Turritella Agate is abundantly found in Wyoming but can also be collected in Colorado and Utah.
Composition: it is a fossil formation consisting of ancient snail shells that have been crystallised and silicified. When the snails died, their shells sank to the bottom of the lake and became covered by dirt and various sediment. Small amounts of microcrystalline silica in the groundwater slowly encompassed the cavities of the shell. This is believed to have occurred in a gel-like substance that eventually hardened over time into a Chalcedony. This brown Chalcedony is the bedrock in which the shells are hosted.
